Joe's songs and playing are inspired by a folk music upbringing and involvements in peace and social justice movements.

Following a year's residency in the Nobel peace prize-nominated Buddhist monk Thích Nhất Hạnh's Plum Village, Joe spent two years travelling, journaling, song writing and singing with community groups at retreats, protest camps and demonstrations, with organisations including Friends of the Earth and the Quakers.  Joe has also for many years been involved with education as a group singing facilitator.

Joe's online journal and album More The Love That's Given (2020) share many of these experiences joeholtaway.com

"I have been supporting Joe Holtaway's music on my radio shows for BBC 6 Music for some years. In addition to his skills as a performer and songwriter, Joe is notable for his passionate engagement with the world around him. There is a constant sense that his music is not merely created in a vacuum, but made and delivered for the benefit of the wider community in which he finds himself'' - Tom Robinson BBC6 Music, Ivor Novello committee
